Tram 28: Explore the City Sights the Traditional Way
There are many ways to tour a city, including those that take you on board of double-decker buses. However, nothing is more memorable and fun than to get to various city attractions via Tram 28 in Lisbon.
Electrico 28 (tram 28) is the vintage yellow tram that plies various routes in Lisbon. It goes through all over the city center, crossing many touristic attractions, while navigating along winding and very narrow streets to town up at sea level.
The tram is a hop-on, hop-off service and there are more than 30 stops you can choose from. The starting point, however, is downtown in Praca Martim Moniz and the end is uptown in Campo de Ourique (Prazeres) – Check the full route in the map below.
Because Tram 28 is reasonably cheap and very popular, a lot of people ride it. So it’s better if you can wait for a time when there are fewer people on board, so you can truly relax and enjoy the sceneries.
Know Your Stopovers
Along the route of tram 28 (electrico 28, in Portuguese), the attractions are picture-perfect. One of the best stops is nearby the six-century-old Castle of St. George. It’s located on one of the seven hills in the city and a huge part of the castle was destroyed by the Great Earthquake of 1755. However, the main structures were recovered and, these days, visitors can enjoy the magnificent castle, the views and many cultural activities that are promoted on its grounds.
From the castle, you can proceed to miradouro das Portas do Sol, a panoramic viewpoint where you can relax or enjoy the cocktail bar and a restaurant offering delicious coffee and light fare.
Tram 28 in Lisbon can also take you to Feira da Ladra, the city’s flea market through Arco de Sao Vicente. The best bargains are found here, and everyone is encouraged to haggle the prices. Sellers come around on Tuesdays and Saturdays, from early morning until late afternoon.
