For The Young At Heart: Bacalhoeiro Restaurant
With a lot of the restaurants and cafes in this area of Porto catering towards those who can truly afford to experiment with fusion and international cuisines, it is refreshing to find an entry on the Porto restaurant scene that is more interested in making their guests comfortable and well fed, without charging them an arm and a leg for the privilege.
A popular favorite among the students that travel regularly through the region and stay in the nearby hostels, the Bacalhoeiro restaurant can get a bit crowded at times but is well worth the wait.
Located on the left bank of the Douro River, in Vila Nova de Gaia, this eatery has everything a traveling student and many other weary travelers can use while exploring the region. Very laid back, especially when compared to other entries on the Porto restaurant scene, it features good food, especially seafood bought fresh from local fishermen, the best of local wines from the many auction houses nearby, and all for a moderate price.
Food and wine is not the only draw to the Bacalhoeiro restaurant, the owners have hosted everything here from alternative bands to film screenings, themed parties and themed dining experiences. Another popular feature, of course, is the free Wi-Fi connection, a rarity amongst other establishments in the area. The portions are generous, especially with the seafood and a couple could easily dine to their hearts content for less than 50 Euros, with drinks.
