Castro Marim : Portugal seen through the times
It is not surprising Castro Marim in Algarve has been attracting thousands of tourists every year. After all, Castro Marim, a town at the eastern part of Algarve, is where history and nature converge. The region is brimming over with fascinating and unique attractions, from historical sites to scenic beaches and rivers. Here, visitors can delight themselves in the sight of flamingos, turquoise waters and dusty fine sand, hills covered with wild flowers as well as remains of the first settlements dating back from 5000BC. The region indeed speaks of the country’s natural beauty and rich history
Historically, Castro Marim Portugal region has been essential, mainly because of its geographical location. Located near the banks of the Guadiana River and near the sea, Castro Marim was a center of economic activity for thousands of years. It was a port for ships that sailed up the river to the metal mines located at the north.
On one of the hills in Castro Marim stand the remains of a square shaped castle, which dates back from the 10th to 12th century. Its main gate design is typical of medieval stone masons; and its porch design bears the typical characteristics of architecture during the Renaissance period, thus providing visitors a glimpse into the city’s colorful past.
From the castle, visitors can enjoy an unrivalled view of Fort of Sao Sebastiao on the opposite hill, of the sea on the other side; and on the other side, the hills stretching away to the horizon. Visitors also get a breathtaking view of the Guadiana River, the scenic village of Almada de Ouro on the river’s banks, and the lakes formed by the Odeleite and Beliche dams.
Other historic sites in Castro Marim Portugal area are the churches, including the Misericordia Church and the main church. Although not so impressive from the outside, the altar of the Misericordia Church is made of seven wooden panels from the 17th century and statues from the 18th century. Meanwhile, the old church also houses statues from as early as the 15th century. At its side chapels, among the statues that can be seen in the church, are the centuries old statues of Archangel Gabriel, St. Lucia, and Our Lady of the Incarnation and of the Martyrs. In addition to the statues, another striking characteristic of the church is its bell tower that is surmounted by a false clerestory.
In addition to these historic attractions, another must see in Castro Marim is the Salt Marsh that covers a land area of over 2,000 hectares of salt march, creeks, salt pans ; and areas of red clay, schist soils and arenite. Containing many types of biotopes, this Natural Reserve is also home to a great number of plants and animal species. The area’s most popular attraction is the different varieties of birds that thrive there, including storks, sand pipers, avocets, mallards and, of course, flamingos. In addition, the area is also home to 439 plant species and home to several amphibians, reptiles and mammals, making it a perfect place for those who appreciate botany or zoology.
However, for those who love the beach, they can also take a dip into any of the city’s picturesque beaches, which are also the top summer tourist destination in Algarve.
Castro Marim in Algarve is indeed where history and nature converge. The city does not only offer visitors a glimpse into the country’s rich and colorful history, but also offers a buffet of breathtaking natural attractions.
