It is not surprising Castro Marim in Algarve has been attracting thousands of tourists every year. On one of the hills in Castro Marim stand the remains of a square shaped castle, which dates back from the 10th to 12th century. Although not so impressive from the outside, the altar of the Misericordia Church is made of seven wooden panels from the 17th century and statues from the 18th century. Meanwhile, the old church also houses statues from as early as the 15th century. At its side chapels, among the statues that can be seen in the church, are the centuries old statues of Archangel Gabriel, St. Lucia, and Our Lady of the Incarnation and of the Martyrs. In addition to the statues, another striking characteristic of the church is its bell tower that is surmounted by a false clerestory.
In addition to these historic attractions, another must see in Castro Marim is the Salt Marsh that covers a land area of over 2,000 hectares of salt march, creeks, salt pans ; and areas of red clay, schist soils and arenite. Containing many types of biotopes, this Natural Reserve is also home to a great number of plants and animal species. The area’s most popular attraction is the different varieties of birds that thrive there, including storks, sand pipers, avocets, mallards and, of course, flamingos. In addition, the area is also home to 439 plant species and home to several amphibians, reptiles and mammals, making it a perfect place for those who appreciate botany or zoology.
